ABOUT FITCHBURG

Like many cities in Southern Wisconsin, Madison has a number of popular suburban communities that have a lot to offer.  Fitchburg is such an area.  One thing that I think makes Fitchburg somewhat unique is due to it's history.  Fitchburg was originally a farming area and was settled as early as 1837 in a farming area near the southern portion of what now is Seminole Highway.  The first permanent settlers were Dutch immigrants, the Vroman brothers, who came to this area to work on the State Capital building and farmed and built a residence in Fitchburg in 1839. In it's more recent history, Fitchburg changed from a 6 mile by 6 mile township and with some legal maneuvering became a City in 1983 to avoid being annexed by the city of Madison.  Fitchburg's population is relatively small, about 40 thousand people, and these people are spread out over nearly 36 square miles.

So Fitchburg has some urban areas, not unlike those in Madison, some rural subdivisions with typically larger lot sizes and  there are still many more rural areas that are activly farmed. So all in all a fairly diverse physical geography in this city contiguous with the City of Madison. As you might expect its population density is low. A significant portion of Fitchburg's residents live in the some of the popular subdivisions near McKee Rd. (HighwayPD),Fishhhatchery Rd, and Lacy Rd. These areas provide attractive subdivisions with well maintained homes generally in the Middle and upper price ranges. These neighborhoods are typical midwestern subdivisions and offer  low crime rates and have  either  Madison or Verona schools depending on the home's location. Resident's salaries and wages in these areas are generally above the state average. Fitchburg Homes for sale (and condo) values are typically above the median value for homes in Madison and in the state of Wisconsin.

Fitchburg has several other areas of settlement that developed because of early stagecoach routes and railroad stops. An area named "Dogtown"was located at Fishhatchery Rd. and Lacy Road. Swan Creek was located at Lacy Road and Highway MM, and Fitchburg Village along Wendt Road may have been  considered early downtown Fitchburg as it had a railroad station, post office, creamery, general store and lumber yard.

Other sites of interest include Quivey's Grove built in 1855, originally named the Mann House and now a popular restaurant, was a stagecoach stop and inn and a meeting place originally. It also had a post office on site that served five neighboring townships. Not on the National Register but still standing are a number of one room school houses located along roadsides near Lacy and Syene Roads,Fish Hatchery Road and Whalen Roads, and County M and Fishhatchery Road. These can be located by historical markers along the roadsides in these areas. A recent addition to the National Register is located along Lacy Road near Highway MM is Spooner's 1852 Swan Creek Farm. This is some of the Fitchburg Wisconsin real estate that is not for sale, and is not to be confused with much newer Swan Creek Subdivision, also along Lacy Road, that has a number of Fitchburg homes for sale.
