The City of Monona is another of Madison's suburban neighbors. Monona is a small community (about 8,000 residents according to the last census) and is bordered by Madison,Lake Monona and wetlands. Monona has beautiful natural surroundings with 24 parks and a sizeable amount of public open space. There are a number of walking paths and bike trails and access to Lake Monona and the Yahara River as well as softball and baseball diamonds and soccer fields. Monona is proud of it's newer community center and community pool and plenty of community events for all ages. Monona residents enjoy the benefits of a small community and the benefits of a larger urban neighbor.
The name Monona was derived from an Algonquin Indian mythological figure and after initially being a part of the Town of Blooming Grove, Monona was incorporated as an independent town in 1938. Some unique features of Monona include the Indian Mounds Park, a small park containing an Indian burial mound believed to be about 2,000 years old. The mound was discovered during a street constuction in the 1940's when several skeletons were unitentionally uncovered. The mound was saved from destruction through the actions of local citizens, the Wisconsin Historical Society and the Wisconsin Archeological Society. A historical marker has been placed at the corner of Midwood and Ridgewood Avenues to commemorate the find.
Spearheaded by the Monona Optimist Club, the Monona Youth dream Park was built in 1997. The Park has a wonderful appeal to children and their parents with it's abundance of different kinds of play equipment, a large castle with turrets, walls and bridges. A dragon structure rises from the castle and a wizard statue welcomes you as you enter this magical land. There is a park shelter available here to rent that also serves as a warming house during ice-skating season.
There is variety in the Monona Wisconsin real estate, ranging from the upscale Lake homes with property values in excess of one million dollars to the much more typical, middle range priced homes more likely to appeal to average home buyer. Monona has it's own school system for the middle and elementary schools and shares a high school with a neighboring community east, Cottage grove. It also has parochial schools available at the elementary and middle school levels.
